To
the UNESCO Director-General,
Mr Koïchiro Matsuura,
UNESCO
Headquarters
Mr. Director-General,
As members of the Coordination Office of
the Italian Environment Protection Association V.A.S. (VERDI AMBIENTE E SOCIETA’:
GREEN ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY) we want to express to you our deep concern for
the serious risk that the historical heritage of the old Mesopotamian
Civilizations will run, in the inauspicious case of a new, devastating, war
against Iraq.
We are persuaded that – as the last hope
to avoid the terrific human and social disaster of this war is put into United
Nations’ hands – the same is true for the protection of the historical sites
and for the preservation of unique monuments in Iraq, seriously endangered by
war operations.
Let us say that we are very surprised by
the absence of a particular UNESCO document or Convention for protecting Iraq’s
rich cultural heritage and, on the contrary, we are astonished for the
appointment of Ms Laura Bush, the wife of the U.S. President, as UNESCO
Cultural Ambassador.
But we sincerely hope that, as expressed
also in the Statement by the Goodwill Ambassadors on 6 February 2003, this war
may be avoided; so we ask you, as Director-General, to promote an urgent UNESCO
statement to preserve not only human lives and the precious environment of Iraq
from the disaster of the war, but also an historical and cultural heritage for
all mankind.
Waiting for a reply, we wish you to work
for peace and civilization also in this tragic occasion.
Sincerely yours,
Antonio D’Acunto, VAS

Egregio Signore,
patrimonio culturale dell’ Iraq.
Distinti saluti.
